Careers In Nursing

Careers in Nursing involve trained nurses who work with patients that have become injured or ill, have problems due to disabilities or aging, or who require counselling on health or mental issues. These nurses provide the care necessary to these people plus offer advice and support to their families.

Nurses work in a number of settings and their duties vary from one setting to another. Nurses that work in hospital wards often check the patient's history, implement a care plan, check temperatures and blood pressures, record changes in the patient's condition, change dressings, and give patient's their daily medications. Nurses who work in emergency units or trauma centers often decide in what order patients are seen in, depending on the severity of their injury or illness. These nurses deal with a wide range of injuries and illnesses; therefore, they are considered the front line of defence. Nurses who work in surgery assist the operating surgeons as well as the other healthcare professionals involved in the operating room at the time. Nurses who work in the community offer support and care to patients in their homes or other community facilities, like nursing homes.

Full-time nurses work a standard week, although it often includes rotating shifts, but there are opportunities for flexible or part-time hours as well. Most nurses wear uniforms as well as protective clothing, gloves, etc. when required. A nurse should be able to understand and relate to all people no matter what their culture or background, should have practical skills, and should remain calm when faced with a situation that is difficult, should pay attention to details, and should be interested in health issues and human biology.
