Cancer Case Study

Julie Said:

What is the best way to study cancer, excluding going into med school? Please help :(?

We Answered:

I can't believe you haven't gotten one decent answer.

YES you can do this without med school. I would say major in biology as an undergrad, focusing on histology (cell biology) or biochemistry.

Choose a university where professors are doing cancer research, or one affiliated with a cancer research center, and while you're an undergrad, try to get a student research assistant or lab assistant job in cancer research.

Then go right into a Ph.D. program. You don't need a master's degree first.

Bioengineering and biotech degrees are fine, but they are geared more toward inventing devices, not towards research into a disease. You can think about double majoring in biology and one of the engineering fields, if you want, but a biology degree has all the flexibility you'd need to switch to doing bacteriology or other biological research.

You can take physics in college. I would suggest waiting, as that way, you can take it after you've had calculus. It's fine to take it in high school, but not at all required. It's not even required in college for bio majors, but it's worth knowing the basics.

Charles Said:

what is the current RTOG 9804 breast cancer study result ?

We Answered:

To my knowledge these results have not been published. This study was closed due to very poor accrual of patients, and hence data will be less than desired. I checked several sources but can't find even an abstract published with any results as of yet.

Blessings
