Case Study On Diabetes
Shawn Said:
Develop a realistic nutrition and exercise plan for Mitch.?We Answered:
Due to his age, his slow metabolic rate and health issues(including smoking). I would put him on a closely monitored 300 cal deficit with light aerobics(maybe) and recommend something like a Mediterranean diet(or soemthing else healthy based on his tastes).Or I could be like most physicans and pimp weight watchers and have them do the work.

Dialysis - yes or no for an elderly person who has diabetes? We Answered:
I think we should take economics out of the equation here.I think that how your grandmother feels about it is the #1 factor to think of here. Is she overall in bad health? I was on dialysis myself and saw lots of very senior citizens there. Some were very sick, and I wondered why they kept at it. Others seemed to do very well.
I would say to try it - if she's ok with it, and understand what happens if she does not go. Or she could start, and if it makes everything worse and she is constantly miserable, she can stop. I will add that she could start and may temporarily feel bad until it starts working.
FYI, I did very well on dialysis. I had been for my 2 mile walk the night I got called for my transplant. I was a Type I diabetic and I did have significant improvement on dialysis.
I had a kidney/pancreas transplant in 2005. I was 45. If my kidney fails, as I get older, I am not sure I would go back on dialysis.
I recommend the message boards and info at kidney.org. I hope you can find someone in your situation who can tell you more. Your grandmother is fortunate to have someone who cares about her as you do.

what do you think about Possible link between insulin glargine and cancer ?I as a type 1 diabetes amvery worry? We Answered:
Here is a quote from the FDA:"Inconsistencies in findings within and across individual studies raise concerns as to whether an association between the use of (Lantus) and cancer truly exists."
The conclusion of the original article on the New York Times, and the conclusion of the Food and Drug Administration, is that the risk of cancer from Lantus (Insulin Glargine) is statistically insignificant. In other words, the incidence of cancer from Lantus are equal to or less than the incidence of cancer from CHANCE.
Most doctors also question the methods used in the studies, indicating that the "scientific method" used was not sufficient to rule out OTHER possible causes of cancer, such as age, obesity, or smoking. The fact is, of the patients that got cancer in these studies, most of them were ALSO old and overweight, and many did or do smoke.
At this point, the great majority of doctors and scientists agree: The BENEFITS of Lantus (better control of the blood sugar) far outweigh the extremely small risk of cancer. In other words, YOU are far better off to continue using Lantus and face a VERY SMALL risk of cancer , than you are to stop using Lantus and risk a VERY GREAT chance of diabetic complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, amputations, or even death.
