In stead of making him do some thing , try to find out in which fields he is good may be he is good at hockey and your try to push him in swimming so check him first and then every thing will be fine :)

Well Im not sure how much help this could br but I was always a slow reader and my mom would write down the word "at" from there put a "C" in front to start building words then growing into 4, 5, and 6 letter words with the work "at" in them, it takes time but it helped me, you just need a good building block word to start with

Check out The First Days of School by Harry Wong and Cooperative Learning by Spencer Kagan. It will give you a lot of valuable information.

Basically, the student is off task because he is not being actively engaged. Students who aren't actively engaged, will do other things that actively engage them.
