Data Mining Case Study
Ted Said:
Do you believe God & Science can co-exist in your mind?We Answered:
Love the question, born a philosopher, can't resist. We are locked within our own being and only perceive the universe from our own perceptions that may not experience all of reality. Thinking also limits us to words and concepts that only represent what we experience without being what we experience. Knowledge and language are very limited and only seem to feed our misunderstandings and disagreements on the subject of science vs religion. These are two different languages.
Science is limited to human knowlege and what we can learn from our senses, furthermore many scientist and philosophers believe that because language fails to define realities, then truth fails too.
These articles at this link: www.ibiblio.org/scst/mills/cep/homepage.… explore the possibility that faith opens us up to more possibility than science.
I personally believe that if God wanted to use the process of what we call evolution then he can. If He wanted to use a big bang he can. Science still cannot explain how the first living cell came into existence or what existed before the big bang. My thoughts are a bit liberal and I believe that I can be both a philosopher and a Christian.

Most domestic violence occur in police / military homes? We Answered:
He isn't getting the information right. There is a higher incidence of domestic violence if you segment the data by occupation, ethnicity, and other factors. Yes, police have a higher rate but that doesn't mean that "most" DV happens in that occupation. I haven't heard about the military, but I would imagine it is higher than average. The US Department of Justice keeps those kinds of data, but relies on municipality and state reporting.Carrie Said:
What are your thoughts about God & Science? We Answered:
It's an interesting point, however there is a major flaw. This is the assumption that the two can in fact occupy different territory. Gods, no matter which religion, have traditionally been used as a means of explaining things we don't really understand. Thousands of years ago it was how lightning bolts formed, now it is the origin of everything. That statement itself should give you some indication of where I'm going with this. No matter where the separate boundaries were set eventually they will conflict because science by it's nature is progressive. This essentially means that regardless of the starting position, science will always end up encroaching on traditional "territories" (if you will) of religion. Most religions are generally dogmatic and largely unchanging so it's very unlikely to genuinely go in the opposite direction (more on this in a bit). Thus in increasing quantities people are forced to choose between the two. This may have the effect of causing people to change parts of their religion but still stick with the fundamental belief (e.g the Catholic church accepting evolution as God's way of changing life) or cling unflinchingly to the most dogmatic of their beliefs in the face of everything (young earth creationism).
I can't say I'm overly familiar with science making philosophical statements but if this is the case then you are correct. Science should always be based on evidence, philosophy is not and it is therefore outside the boundary of science. However disputing philosophical claims by use of the scientific method is not if the appropriate evidence is available. Religion should never enter into science. It is, by definition, a dead end when used within the scientific method.
I'm afraid I'm not particularly eloquent with this kind of thing. Still, I hope this gives a reasonable indication of my feelings on the subject. This is also probably a good time to say that I don't have any particular animosity towards religious beliefs (outside of the ridiculous claims surrounding things like YEC).

Was AT&T's decision to allow the NSA to wiretap the communications of its customers infringement of privacy? We Answered:
Depends on when the violation occurred, and whom AT&T volunteered the records of but there are a number of laws that allow law enforcement agencies to obtain the records and to wiretap individuals under specific circumstances and of course there is the newer Patriot Act which can be used by Homeland Security and the NSA in circumstances where legally they might not usually have the right.
