Andrew Said:

Is there anything Harley Davidson can do to compete more for market share of ageing baby boomers segment?

We Answered:

$6000 Road King.

Dwight Said:

What control system does Harley Davidson use?

We Answered:

during the 1980's Harley Davidson were suffering during the mid eighties a business guru by the name of BEN PETERS was bought into redefine the company.
He started at grass root level on the floor and went to see how the product was made and how it was finished...
At this time period Harleys were poorly built and had a real image problem the madness of it all was they had huge amounts of components and sub assemblies all stock piled. production was slow and the staff force were not motivated.
He "challenged" business practices and spoke to the individuals asking them about what they did, how they did it did they enjoy doing it and what THEY themselves would do to improve their lot, were they in the right position in the company. People were then encouraged to make their own improvements and have a say..
The stock piles of parts and sub assemblies were removed never to be replaced. instead they were replaced with what was called JUST IN TIME management strategy.

JUST IN TIME is the CONTROL strateegy used by Harley Davidson.
Right how does it work.
Rather than having 100 pairs of handlebars in stock for 1 model of bike when you would only produce say 10 of that model in one week you keep 15 pairs
you built your ten set of sub assemblies ready for the run of bikes
The parts system see's you have taken 10 sets of bars and instructs the finance department to order 15 sets more, so the stock o raw material is passed onto the supplier not wasting space or aging in your stock room.
