Performing arts management personnel have made significant strides in the battle to win audience share for live theatre and to keep the art form as a relevant expression of culture in the UK in the twenty-first century. These points and others I illustrated by using Southwark Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre as case studies in this essay.
There are many more challenges for management to tackle however; including up-dating plays to reflect the changing definition of “culture” in the present age. Many skills are needed to attract a diverse audience to performances that reflect today’s values. Experimental theatre—a positive influence—has provided a platform for “trying something new” that will attract younger, diverse patrons to the plays.
Factors such as the economy, technology (specifically television) and ticket prices driven up by the rising costs of renting venues have a negative effect on the survival of live theatre. For these and other reasons, live theatre has not thrived or progressed in the twenty-first century.
The definition of ‘culture’ is not fixed; it is fluid and changes with time. What culture consists of can be an individual construct as well as a collective construct. Dynamic cultural events which attract younger, diverse people and maintain the current numbers of patrons will allow relevance and the maintenance of live theatre in the UK in the future.
The challenge continues to find lasting solutions to these problems.
