Apply For Grants For College

Michele Said:

Can my daughter apply for college grants (bright futures etc.) with an Alien number?

We Answered:

You should probably talk to someone in the Financial Aid office of the college she is going to attend or her high school counselor for specific information. I did find that you do not need to submit a Social Security number for the Bright Futures. However, I could not find anywhere to see if she qualifies with her immigration status.

From the site:
What if I do not want to supply my Social Security Number (SSN)?
It is not required by law to submit an SSN for evaluation of financial aid through the state of Florida. If you choose to leave your SSN blank, the system will generate a pseudo number. Providing your SSN allows the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) to collect necessary information to determine award eligibility. Financial assistance will not be denied for failure to disclose your SSN. However, without your SSN, correct identification of your records cannot be assured and may result in an error in the award amount or delay in the disbursement of an award.

There's a great reference guide to the entire financial aid system. It's free, it's easy to read and understand, and it explains everything you could possibly want to know.

"Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid" is an annual publication of the US Department of Education. The new 2010-2011 guide was just released a couple of weeks ago.

The booklet explains all of the different types of aid that are available to help college students pay for school - and despite the title, it also goes beyond just federal assistance, and offers information on state assistance, aid offered directly by the schools, and scholarships, too.

The Department goes to a lot of trouble to make this information readily available - you should be able to pick up a copy if you ask at the guidance office at your high school. If you'd prefer to read it online - again - absolutely free - you can find the latest version right here: http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attach…

The only reliable source of "grants" for college are the federal and state governments. The booklet explains about the Pell Grant, and the rest of the federal government's grant programs, and it also talks about the states that offer grant support, like New York's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and California's Cal Grants. You'll discover that a "grant" is awarded on the basis of financial need - you'll have to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid ("FAFSA") so that your school can determine whether you are eligible. You'll also read about the government's student loan programs, which is the primary form of assistance that is offered to college students, not 'free' money.

Spend some time with the booklet, and pass it on to your parents when you're done with it. There's a lot of information in there for you, but there's also some important info for your parents about the PLUS Loan program, which can provide a low-cost source of funds to your parents to help them cover your school expenses.

I hope this information helps you - good luck!

can anyone please tell how soon my daughter should start to apply for college grants, loans graduates in 2010?

We Answered:

She will have to fill out the FAFSA first..she can submit that beginning on Jan 1, 2010. She has to get a pin number beforehand. You should start reseaching scholarships soon too..you can use the due date of this year to estimate the due date of next...some scholarships are due in October. I am going through this process with my child now.so I am learning as I go along. Good luck!

What is the best way to find out and apply for college grants?

We Answered:

Hi, It may be too late to get grants for this semester, but here is a step by step process on how to apply for grants: http://www.ehow.com/how_5362903_college-… . Most grants are based on your FAFSA, so if you need more financial aid, see here:http://www.ehow.com/how_5391500_apply-fi…

Clarence Said:

Are you suppose to be accepted into a college before you apply for grants and loans?

We Answered:

Yes! You need to know that you will be attending that college before filling the applications.... otherwise you will get approved for financial aide... and then say you dont get accepted... then, well, you will have to cancel that request.... if that all makes sense. But yes, wait for the acceptance, then apply for grants.
