Rik:There are only two sources of "grants" for US college students - the federal government, and your state government. Organizations do not give college hopefuls "free money" for nothing. If you're looking for free college money other than government money, you're looking for scholarships, and as I think you already know (and are hoping to avoid), scholarships are awarded on the basis of talent, potential, accomplishments and competition.
I have a serious suggestion - and that's that you spend an hour reading through the really helpful US Department of Education publication called "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid". The Department publishes the booklet every single year, so they can assure that it is up to date with all of the latest information about ALL of the sources of financial aid that are available to college students in this country.
You can ask at the guidance office of your school for a copy, or you can read the entire thing online at the Department of Education website. You'll read about the grants, scholarships, loans, fee waivers, and the federal work study program - anything you could possibly want to know about how the aid system works is in there. You'll learn what's available, who qualifies, how much you might receive, and most importantly, how to apply for all of it.
The most important thing you'll learn about is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or "FAFSA", which is the single most important financial aid application that you'll need to complete. In fact, you'll want to complete it every year that you are in college. Completing the FAFSA will get you considered for just about all of the aid that's out there - almost everything except the private scholarships.
There is money available strictly on the basis of financial need - your eligibility will be determined by evaluating the financial circumstances of you and your parents. That's what the FAFSA is used for. Read the booklet, and pass it to your parents when you're done - there's a lot of helpful information in there for them, too.
Good luck to you!
