College Of Cape Town

Harold Said:

Americans going to a South African college?

We Answered:

Don't listen to B O, some people are just born unhappy. Maybe South Africa isn't perfect, but you would be worse off in most other countries. Our qualification are recognized overseas, but depending on the course and the country you are planning to use it in, you might just want to check. The university in Cape Town was also rated as one of the top 500 in the world.

One of the advantages of studying in South Africa is that it is going to be very cheap, if you are paying in dollars. South Africa is also a good place to start if you plan on traveling through Africa, moving north of here you will soon see where civilization stops and Africa begins. Crime in South Africa in general is probably no worse than in the big U.S. cities, so you probably know what to look out for. Four years is still a long time to plan ahead, but who knows.

Joy Said:

What is Cape Town, RSA like?

We Answered:

Cape Town has something like 3.5 million people, but spread across a very large area. It depends what you consider a big city, but I do consider it one. Cape Town is by far my favorite city in Africa, and probably one of the safest. Remember though, South Africa has a reputation for crime, and CT is no exception. (The Police in South Africa are really terrible by the way, not just lazy, but corrupt.) It's a really gorgeous city with beautiful mountains and beaches. There is a considerable amount of nightlife, usually near the touristy-beach areas. I really like it here and it's a fun place to live.

Bottom line is - if you're coming from the US, the crime, even here in CT (one of the 'safer' cities) will probably shock you. If you're worried about crime, I'd definitely recommend somewhere other than South Africa. New Zealand and Europe are FAR safer than South Africa.

How do I convince my parents to take me to Cape Town, South Africa?

We Answered:

I really admire you for your determination. You seem to have everything planned. That is a good start in your life. A lot of people land up in old age and still do not know what they want to do!! Way to go!!

Although I have no suggestion how you can convince your parents about getting you to Cape Town, I agree with the other 2 answers. Experience is the richest thing that you can have. It does not matter in what, but DO things.

If you take a look at this question I posted, and the good Best Answer, you will see some good links. Read up on volunteer work and the requirements and qualifications one needs to to such work. You are still too young to do this sort of thing, but knowledge is power.

It costs quite a bit of money to do volunteer work, but you have quite a few years to prepare for that. I suggest you start a fund for yourself and save whatever you can raise in a deposit account.

Your parents could come up with some good ideas to support and help you in your aim to collect money to sponsor you in doing some volunteering work, there are many projects in Cape Town.

In the meantime, try out some projects in your neighbourhood. There is bound to be some association that welcomes junior members to help them. That will help you gain experience for your future.

So, don´t just sit about moping because you cannot get to Cape Town yet. It is way more expensive going to Cape Town than it is going to Berlin, although I must admit that Cape Town is way more beautiful.

Get out, and start doing things, joins associations, charities. Gain experience and knowledge and you will have a head start on your dream of running an orphanage.
