Colleges In London

Sidney Said:

Do you know that there are private colleges in London offering degree level courses..?

We Answered:

I know, don't think or feel or believe, I know there are a lot of private colleges in London and in the provinces, that do as you say. However, there is really nothing wrong with this.
The Home Office has introduced measures to stop the issue of international student visas to attend rogue colleges in several ways.
1. Student visas are not issued for colleges that do not appear on the DfES list of approved educational establishments. This has been in effect for over two years.
2. International student visas are not issued to study for degrees awarded by foreign universities (e.g., American universities) unless the university is accredited in its own country. In the USA accreditation is voluntary - not awarded by the Federal Government - and this rule has been in effect for around two years as well. It has shown a marked decline in the number of such courses being sold abroad.
3. Many private colleges have contracts to deliver degree courses from fully accredited UK universities. The universities inspect the colleges, approve the tutors and mark exams and assignments themselves, avoiding any chance of foul play by those colleges. The inspection process is very rigorous and contracts are not easily granted to colleges, especially newer ones with short track records. The universities advise the DfES of the names of those colleges with whom they have such contracts and they appear on the list of "Listed Bodies". The Home Office is shortly going to introduce a rule that visas are granted only for colleges on the Listed Bodies list.

In any case, assessment of student assignments and exams is done by the universities, not by the colleges, so your assertion that the students get no more than they could get at home is not correct. They must meet UK standards to pass.

With regard to fees, you are correct. UK universities charge non-EU citizens up to double the fees that they charge to EU citizens and this causes great hardship for talented international students - especially those from poorer families - so, private colleges often charge lower fees than their partner universities. The universities, as part of their contract with the colleges, stipulate a minimum fee. And that is why the students are in colleges and not in the universities. As universities also insist on approving the tutors in private colleges, there really is no reason to doubt the quality of education international students receive in private colleges.

Comparative of best colleges in London for a BA?

We Answered:

As mushimoro says, it depends on what you intend studying. UCL is probably the best. Most of the other colleges are former ploytechnics and a few of them have very good schools in one dicipline but you have to share the campus with the retards in other schools.
