Right; the big names are generally blowing smoke, and the claims are not generally recognized. There are a few ratings published each year, such as the ones that Kaplan and the Princeton Review issue. These are available in your library or bookstore. The same section (look near SAT test prep) will have other books with more detailed listings of all the schools in the country, giving their strengths and weaknesses, requirements, demographics, and so on.

Depending on your definition of "best", you might want to check out "Colleges that Change Lives" (ctcl.org), Loren Pope's well-presented research on the top 40 school*s in the country for turning out well-rounded, highly educated, independent-thinking adults. These schools have excellent faculty-student interactions, and require a high level of student involvement in the education process. Also, these schools recognize that a large part of that education comes outside the classroom.
