Free College Grants

Rebecca Said:

Can anyone please tell me how I can find free grants so I can get an apartment and go to college?

We Answered:

I don't know if you'll get out of your mom's house and speaking as a mom I don't know if you're ready to be on your own. I know our seniors had many oportunities to gather info about getting fin.aid this year. One of mine graduated monday.
Getting to the financial aid-
1. Make and appointment (soon) with the councilors at the financial aid office in the college you'd like to attend. If they have dorms you may be able to get some money for that, especially if it is 50 miles or more from your mom's house.
2. Go to the federal site at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and fill out the forms there. Many grads have already filled out thiers and you need to get on the ball here.
3. Did you participate in anything that you could get a grant from (i.e. band, debate, sports...)
4. If you kind of know your major--sometimes people will pay for your school in advance if you want to train to be something out of the ordinary that they will need. Some of these situations aren't that uncommon. Just today someone told me he knew a 3rd year nurse specializing in neonatal. She has already been given a $25,000 signing bonus to sign on for a few years at a certain hospital. Med school can sometimes be paid for this way also. Outlying areas need town dr's and are willing to pay for your school if you promise them to work there for 10-15 years.
5. Don't look down on loans and only apply for grants. If you choose a high paying field to study and are good at you could pay your loans back in just a few years.
Personally, I think you should fill out the fafsa stuff tonight and call the fin.aid office in the morning to set up an appointment. Go in nice clothes and be groomed and well mannered. Tell them your goals and see what they can do for you. And everytime you meet someone that can help you now (or maybe later) write downd their numbers and make a few notes so you'll remember them. This is called networking and can be a very valuable resource. Your high school guidance councelor can also help you.
Good luck in all of your future educational goals and go easy on your mom. She's just trying to do some last finishing touches on her baby before she sends him/her out in to the big bad world where you'll learn no one loves you as much as your mom ; )

Contact the schools fin. aid dept.'s and ask. The squeeky wheel gets the grease. You could also contact people in your future field and ask them. People love to talk about themselves and their careers. Try a serious, detailed net search for counciling, specializations and the word grants or scholorships. But really, call the schools. Ask them 'if you came in would they be able to do anything else for you?' Good luck!

How do I find and apply for free government grants for college?

We Answered:

In addition to the other suggestion that you have received talk to the financial aid office at your school. They may be aware of other government grants and or scholarships for college.

Gertrude Said:

Is there a way to get free college education without grants or loans?

We Answered:

For some colleges/universities, if you are an actual employee there, tuition may be free. I'm actually looking to transfer in the fall as I began a new job with a local university and that is the case there.
