In the Valley, to name a few: Modesto Junior College, Columbia College, Cosumnes River College, Fresno City College

Along the coast: Los Angeles Valley College, Mission College, Monterey Peninsula College, San Diego Miramar College

They are usually called community colleges these days, and I very much disagree with the previous answerer that they are all pretty much the same. I spent almost 20 years at a faculty member in a 4-year college in California dealing with transfer students, and I saw huge differences. I can't tell you much about Northern California, but in Southern California (L.A. area), Santa Monica College was the one with the best reputation and the highest transfer rate to 4-year colleges, followed by Pasadena City College.

You should also look at Mt San Antonio College. They have a very high transfer rate to colleges all over the US. The school is ranked as one of the top JC's in the nation.
