Majors In College List

Sylvia Said:

Does college of Arts and Sciences mean liberal arts?

We Answered:

Not really. In many Universities the College of Arts and Sciences will include a wide array of majors from Music to Microbiology. At a Liberal Arts university, of which we call most of our colleges in the States (Even 'tech' universities like CMU, MIT and Virginia Tech are liberal arts institutions) you will learn a wide array of subjects, making up what the ancient Greeks called a "Liberal Arts Education." (Actually there were 7 original subjects in a liberal arts education ranging from Astronomy to Rhetoric) The College of Arts and Sciences is just one "college" within the liberal arts university. A College of Business, sometimes a College of Medicine, a College of Engineering, and a College of Law are all parts of a liberal arts university.

College Majors Salary List Misleading?

We Answered:

I hate these lists--if they included the range of salaries, that would be more informative. It depends on your subspecialty in some cases, your school and GPA (for something like computer science), your work-related experience, where you live and many other factors--even your interpersonal skills. Kids look at these and decide based on salary, when often it's misleading as you note, and that is NOT why you should pick a particular major. Sometimes students will pick something and then take easy courses with a C average and expect to get the same type of job as someone who took very rigorous coursework and got As.

Samuel Said:

Where can I find and master list of majors?

We Answered:

That's like asking for ONE big menu that covers all the food that most restaurants serve. It's kind of a vast question. You might want to consider career counseling to help you narrow down what you want to do with your academic career.

A couple of things for inspiration...

1) Here's a list of the top 10 most profiteable college majors and their starting annual salaries:

Chemical engineering, $55,900
Electrical engineering, $52,899
Mechanical engineering, $50,672
Computer science, $50.046
Accounting, $45,723
Economics/Finance, $45,191
Civil engineering, $44,999
Business administration, $38,850
Marketing, $36,260
Liberal arts majors, $30,828

2) Here's a quiz that matches up college majors and personalities. There's about 10 questions. At the end of the quiz it tells you what majors you should consider, based on your answers to the questions. When I took it, it was dead on about my academic interests.
