Medical College of Georgia and Augusta State University... Advice Needed?

We Answered:

Univ of Georgia isnt a great school either, so transfering there doesnt make too much sense. Maintain the 4 GPA, and ask your professors if they know colleagues in other good universities to whom they can recommend you for grad school or further studies. Am sure they must be knowing other people, and since you are a good student they will give you good recommendations. Transfer is a hassle, and it may not help you too much in the final goal.

Fred Said:

Does Medical College of Georgia have a Surgical Program for people that are intrested in becoming a surgeon???

We Answered:

They have a Medical School there. You'd have to get accepted, do your first two years of book work, pass the first boards, do your clinicals, pass the second boards, graduate, then get into a surgical residency.

Then you can do Surgery. How fun.

Ryan

Is the Medical College of Georgia a good medical school? Does it matter where you go?

We Answered:

here's there website: http://www.mcg.edu/som/
look at it, maybe you can find the 2008 freshmen class profile, and see what sort of grades and MCAT scores the students have. not that thats everything of course, but if the average GPA is 2.5, and the MCAT score is 16, i'd look somewhere else lol
and in terms of your question does it matter where you go: well, lets just say that when applying to residencies it can't *hurt* to be going to a school that has consistently ranked in the top 10 or so on the us world news rankings. those rankings shouldn't matter, but thats the way it is. it won't necessarily benefit you a lot, but it won't hurt you. but, you should know that most medical schools have very similar curriculums and are good schools, so it comes down to things like: location, student body/class size, the people, and maybe particular strength in a speciality that you are considering (but don't base your decision solely on that because you will probably change your mind about your speciality). also, some schools are very well known as great research institutions, but not primary care. and some are the opposite. which are you more interested in? there are plenty of great medical schools that have wonderful research and primary care, but usually one is a bit stronger than the other.
oh, and you should know that you should be applying to around 10-12 schools. if you live in california, or another state that is very competitive for med school admission (in that many who are residents of that state are applying to med school), you'll want to up that number to 15-20. it sounds crazy, but apparently this is what you should do, according to "the books." also, make sure to look at state universities in your home state, even if you don't think they will be your first choice. You can get a discount! med school is mad expensive, so financial aid, and tutition need to be factors in decisions.
GOOD LUCK
