Navy Rotc Colleges

Nathaniel Said:

Navy ROTC?

We Answered:

yes,

Rotc is just a class.

The first two years it is 1 hour 3 days a week.

The last two years it is 1 hour a day, 5 days a week.

The last two years, there are other time commitments for ROTC, but you can do both with no problem.

There are plenty of varsity athletics in ROTC.

Sean Said:

How does one participate in a navy college ROTC program, but choose to enter the Marine Corp instead of Navy?

We Answered:

The Nrotc 4 year high school scholarships are applied for on the Nrotc the website or at a Marine Recruiter. A first class Marine Pft is required as with all Marine officer programs. The scholarships are not awarded based on planned academic major. The Nrotc Navy Option Scholarships use the Navy Fitness test and are applied for on the website or at a Navy Recruiter. Eighty five percent of the Navy Option Scholarships are awarded to Engineering, Math and certain Science majors.

It is possible to switch from Marine to Navy Option or Navy to Marine before the Junior year but there are no guarantees if on Scholarship. Navy Option Mids are required to take Calculus, and Physics with Calculus as a prerequisite.
Good description of Nrotc by reading the Faq on the website of the nation's first Nrotc Battalion:

Shirley Said:

Can I be in Coast Guard Student Reserve and Navy ROTC in college at the same time?

We Answered:

Your most definitive answer about a conflict of interest would come your college's ROTC contact and probably your local USCG recruiter too.

Probably not because I think you've got to be a full-time student to earn an ROTC scholarship. If you could do ROTC and USCG Reserves simultaneously then you wouldn't have enough time to be a full-time student.

Here's a summary of your intended commitment:
+ ROTC requires a 1 weekend/month commitment
+ a 1-2 hour ROTC class each semester
+ 16 hours of other classes
+ USCG commitment of 1 weekend/month
+ USCG Reserves require more time outside of our 1 weekend/month. You've got to study regulations, protocols and other stuff and earn personal qualifications so that you can be more useful other than just sitting at the watch desk answering the telephone. You want to go out on the boat and conduct patrols or respond to oil spills, right?

Attending class and studying is a full-time job by itself. If you complete all the reading and homework and term paper research required for a full-time load of 16 hours of classes, that's about 30 hours of work each week. You'd be in class for 16 hours each week. When will you sleep, travel to campus, travel to USCG station, do laundry and what ever other household chores you've got, polish and maintain your ROTC and USCG uniforms and shop for groceries and prepare meals and eat? Ask your parents how energetic they feel after working their full-time jobs to work a part-time job too.

If money for college is your intentions, USCG will give that to you. In addition to your pay for working 1 weekend/month + 2 weeks/yr you get $4500/yr of tuition assistance and use your approx. $13,000 of GI Bill and towards tuition. After you've completed your 3 years of weekend drills + 2 weeks/year, you can separate from USCG then enlist or apply for Navy officer candidate school.
