Online Courses For College Credit

Keith Said:

Do all online courses require previous college credit?

We Answered:

There are quite a few actually. In fact, most I have come across do not require previous coursework, and I have been in the higher ed industry for years...both on campus and online.

My advice for you is if you need to go online, go to a non-profit college. Many community colleges offer online classes and degrees now, and at a fraction of the price of the for-profits. Plus, no one ever questions the education or degree earned at community college - unlike the for-profit schools. Community colleges do not require previous coursework either.

Eva Said:

what are some online courses(preferably with college credit) that i can do this summer?

We Answered:

There are free public online high schools that run during the summer. Check your state first by going to this site: http://www.onlinehighschool.org
If that doesn't work, look for the private online high schools listed on that same site.
There is also a lot of good information.

Mathew Said:

are online college courses given same credit with employers as regular attended college?

We Answered:

Leighla suggested "Never do online college anything. it is not the same as real college at all and employers wont higher you."

First off, I rarely look to "higher" anyone - we hire our employees and find online college grads learned to use good grammar and spelling. "Wont" is a different word than "won't". A good online writing course, maybe from UC-Berkeley http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/cat/online.… (If you can even get in there) might help you a lot. I'm sure they're just typos though. Maybe you'd enjoy an editing course at Harvard University online http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2009-10…

My real point for you though - what do you propose to do when you come to my company and ALL of our employee training is done online? Do you think you'll be able to hack it with no online learning experience. I suspect not. How about when the marketing manager wants you to present at a meeting in e-conference? Any experience there from your classroom? You see, without at least some online experience - you're dead-meat in the real world these days.

Everyone and his brother teaches online these days. One recent study tells us it's about 80% of all colleges in the US. This includes the likes of Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, UC-Berkeley, Berklee Music, Oxford, Duke.... the very best in the world. I'm not going to presume that I know more than they do and say "all online college is bad" - that would be the height of arrogance and patently ignorant at best.

Anyone that doesn't see the way things are going is blind and stuck in 1984. They'll have a great career in fast-food or table serving when they graduate and haven't read the writing on the wall. We need no employees that are tech illiterate. Not a single one.

Add: I didn't answer the original question. It is entirely dependent on the reputation of the school that awarded the degree. Any degree from a good school is valuable. Any degree from a bad school is less so. It doesn't matter at all whether the work was done online or classroom because (in almost all cases) it doesn't say so on the diploma or transcript.

Some schools just don't have a very good reputation and some of those teach online. Some schools have a great reputation - and they too teach online.

Gerald Said:

How do YOU feel about YOUR online (college credit)course?

We Answered:

-It was less stressful because I didn't have to drive to the school as much and I was able to lay in bed and do my tests.

-Expect a lot more reading. I never had videos.

-Yes, it was more difficult because we had to communicate through email and he would accidently delete our messages and such.

-I bought an ebook, or an online version of the text and printed it. It was nice because then I could look up material or read it in a binder.

-Sometimes I would forget to go online and take the tests and it hurt my grade a little. But I wasn't less motivated to study.

-Good luck!
