Articles On Reading Comprehension

Rosemary Said:

Improving on ACT reading test?

We Answered:

Well, I don't know of any articles but here are some reading stratagies.

1. Read the questions first and make note of EXACTLY what they are asking. This serves two purposes in that one, you already know what to look for and two, you are already thinking about possible answers. If you can, use scratch paper, or underline or highlight important parts of the question.

2 Glance at the headings and subheadings BEFORE you start so that you are already thinking where to find the answers. This is part of the SQ4R method which is a reading stratagy.

3. Read for the answers (which, I know, is not how you learn something). Again, as you read, underline and highlight if you can. Also, make notes in the margins (I use arrows) if you find something of importance.

4. PRACTICE. Expository (non-ficiton) writing is usually the hardest for every reader. See if your teachers, especially your social science, econ, science, etc teachers have practice tests you can borrow. You can also work on answering the questions at the end of chapters and reviews (not just for class) to improve expository reading.

5. Improving vocab and word comprehension on expository texts will also help. Use context clues for words you do not know the meaning to make sure you don't miss something important.

Conservatives and Reading Comprehension?

We Answered:

well conservatives have had a reading comprehension problem for many years now.

the same guys who just hated the filibuster when the dems used it against them but think it's just swell when they use it to thwart the will of the american people as expressed in the last election.

the same guys who were really into the 'rule of law' when it applied to clinton lying on the stand about questions that shouldn't have been asked in the first place, but don't see what all the fuss is over libby obstructing justice in a case trying to get to the bottom of the outting of a cia operative - an operative who worked on middle east wmds - which, by the way, is why the iraq war was started in the first place.

yep, those guys have real problems dealing with reality.

which is why they will not survive as a political force unless they stop straying further and further from the herd daily...

Developing critical reading skills?

We Answered:

I had the same problem in school, but I developed critical reading skills when my boyfriend suggested I read things that I have no interest in. A good way to develop the skill is reading CNN.com, USATODAY.com, and other news sources. Reading diverse topics will help you grasp boring and difficult readings in school. Also, try reading a regular novel during your leisure time. Try this method also, every time you read a paragraph, break down the summary and write it on the side. It will help you comprehend it little by little instead of trying to understand the whole thing at once. Overall, the only way to improve is to just read a lot in general. But definitely try reading every topic in the news. It helped me A LOT.
