Christmas Reading Comprehension

Juan Said:

Shepherds Abiding by Jan Karon question??

We Answered:

'Shepherds abiding' revolves around FatherTim's restoration of an old, battered nativity set, which he hopes to complete for his wife,Cynthia as a surprise for Christmas.
As he painstakingly sands the plastic figures, uncovering their natural beauty, he also uncovers a surprising talent for working creatively with his hands.

Father Timothy Kanangh,Stalwart at the Mitford series,is approaching 70 when he comes across pieces of an old English nativity scene at his friend's antique shop.
Inspired by memories of a manger from his childhood that was destroyed in a rainstorm,Father Tim takes up the cause, planning to surprise his artist wife.

Thus begins Father Tim's journey to Bethlehem.
Advent takes on new meaning for Father Tim as he takes on his new challenge : repairing the shepherds, angels, and Baby Jesus.
As he works on the figures, exploring an artist side,he discovers the best of all presents - the gift of ones heart.

The novel seeks to restore the true Christmas spirit.
Karon stays true to the adage that all things are possible with hard work, ingenuity and faith.

Norman Said:

What book should I get?

We Answered:

The Mortal Instruments trilogy by Cassandra Clare - it sounds like she'll love this.
www.cassandraclare.com for more info.

The Hunger Games & sequel, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - HIGHLY recommend! Amazing books.

I'm 14 and I love those books.
I don't like Twilight either.
Your sister and I have similar taste ^^

Sergio Said:

is this a fair amount of homework for a 10 year old?

We Answered:

As a teacher, and a secondary school teacher, I can say that is far, far too much. I wouldn't set this amount for years 7-11, let alone year 6!

I personally would ask your son to do what you think is a reasonable amount (ie, finish the project and reading booklet, and a couple of pages of the maths and english), then send a letter (or go into the classroom with him) with him first day back explaining that you refused to allow him to complete the work due to what you regarded as an excessive amount, and if the teacher would like to discuss this further then to arrange a meeting with yourself and the head teacher. Stress that you do not expect your son to be penalised in any way for your decision and actions.

If you are friendly with any of the other parents ask them to do the same with their children, if they feel the same about the homework situation.

Your son is entitled to a Christmas break and they've set a couple of hours' work a day.

Discuss It!
