College Reading Comprehension

Hugh Said:

I'm taking Reading Comprehension 140 in college ....?

We Answered:

Catcher in the Rye is a good book, so is The Great Gatsby, or Catch 22, also 1984 is a good book :)

Mathew Said:

During your college years, did you see any improvements in your reading, retention and comprehension skills?

We Answered:

I did not notice any improvements in these skills during my college years. However, I noticed the improvement after I started my career. I had to learn a new language, which improved my retention and comprehension skills. I had to read material that was much more relevant to what I was doing and had to write reports. Thus, my writing skills improved tremendously. I think the most important aspect for improving your academic skills is their relevancy of your professional requirements.

Christine Said:

i am a struggling college student who needs to improve reading comprehension and writing skills.?

We Answered:

There are plenty of books around that assist with improving reading comprehension and writing skills. Check your college library.

You can also seek specific advise by going to your college's student counselling service. They do not just deal with psychological problems but with study problems and will have a range of resources available for you. Make an appointment and see them.

Hope this helps.

Alfredo Said:

If i suck at reading comprehension is college for me?

We Answered:

Don't be discouraged! Of course you will be successful if you work hard.
I went to one of the toughest university in Canada, and I saw a blind girl succeeding in scientific history class. I also know from a friend of mine a girl with dyslexia who was fairly successful.
Reading textbook is important but not everything. If you are not good at reading comprehension, focus on what you are good at (figures and facts, numbers, diagrams and visual form of learning etc).

If reading is hard, take point form notes while reading. Then just read over your notes many times. There are always ways.
