Comprehension Main Idea

Jessie Said:

Do you teach reading? How do you teach strategic reading skills to your students?

We Answered:

Educational games are ususally successful. I don't know what level but you can adapt these ideas. These ideas are not best suited to introduction of skills, but rather reinforcement and check-up.

Scanning and Skimming: Play "Go Hunt". Give the student a text, call out something for them to find, say "Go Hunt!" and see who can find it first.

Use a tic-tac-toe type game for teams. Ask questions about a story just read for comprehension check and play as usual. Number the squares so the team captain can ask for a square. just be sure to explain what happens if a team is wrong. You can play several ways.

Play a Main Idea game in teams like baseball. Read short paragraphs and ask the student to state the main idea. They advance to bases for correct answers. Or use this with multiple choice answers to identify examples of the different skills.

Teacher created games are a lot of work but worth the effort.

Andy Said:

Learning disability or adhd?

We Answered:

I though I had an adult ADD or memory problem. They did a neuropsychological exam and it turns out I have an iq of 145 (that above average) and my problem wasn't ADD or memory, it was me thinking was going so fast and I was thinking of thing is such a different way, that I wasn't "writing" thing to my memory. I was working more like RAM than ROM.

So you never know. Have a neuropsychological exam, it can tell you a lot. Combine it with an MRI.

Even if you have learning disabilities, you can train yourself to do things to remeber things.

Good luck

How can i find a study guide on reading comprehension?

We Answered:

There are a number of factors, which impact your reading comprehension. First, you have to concentrate to the text while you are reading. Avoid distractions, do not deal with anything else or thing to other issue expect the text. Do not watch TV or talk to other people when reading.

Before starting to read make a quick preview of the text. It means that you look through the text before starting to read it.

First, read the title of the text. Then look through the table of contents (if the text consists of many chapters). If you read the titles of all chapters you will get quite a good idea what the material is about. Next, look the text through at fast pace. Search for words and sentences with larger or bold font. Read them. If you find any tables or figures then take a glance on them. Do not waste too much time on them. Finally, read the introduction and the conclusion of the text or in case of a shorter text or article the first and last paragraph of it. These parts of the text usually will tell you much about what is written in the middle part of the text.

When you start reading the text after having completed the preview, you will know much of the material already. The text will be familiar to you and you will be able to remember it much faster.

Making notes while reading is also a good idea. It will allow you to check over the most important parts of the text. You may also want to mark some places in the text. You may use a marker for that or you can dog-ear some pages you want to look through again afterwards
