Jon Said:

ASVAB results and my qualities, what can I do?

We Answered:

It looks like you qualify for most rates, based on your scores. However, they'll only offer you rates which have openings at the time you go to MEPS.

Enlisting as a Seabee won't give you much experience in engineering. You'll be swinging a hammer, driving a bull dozer or pouring concrete; at least until you make CPO.

Why does the bible use metaphors + symbolism etc instead of using easy to understand words?

We Answered:

Matthew 13

10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"

11 He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Psalm 90

4 For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

2 Peter 3

8 With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

Another side question: Christians claim that god tests people's faith through certain events. But if god is all knowing, why does he need to test us? Surely he knows how much faith we have?

OF COURSE, GOD KNOWS - HE IS OMNISCIENT.
THE TESTING OF OUR FAITH IS FOR US TO KNOW.

Matthew 14:31
"You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

Matthew 15:28
"Woman, you have great faith!

Matthew 16:8
"You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?

Matthew 17:20
Because you have so little faith.

TO FLAMINGCHARIOT22:

"Jesus spoke in parables and allegories so the people could grasp the spiritual concepts he was conveying."

JESUS SPOKE IN PARABLES SO PEOPLE WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND. EVEN THE DISCIPLES DID NOT UNDERSTAND. THAT IS WHY HE HAD TO EXPLAIN THEM. HE DID NOT EXPLAIN THEM TO THE PEOPLE, ONLY TO HIS DISCIPLES.

Matthew 13

34 Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables.

Mark 4

10 But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.

11 And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables

13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

Woodrow Wilsons 14 points?

We Answered:

whoo, i just took AP Euro, so I actually know what I'm talking about on a history related question, brilliant!
1. No secret alliances.
2. Just what it says... no territorial boundaries on the seas, just on land.
3. No tariffs. (Tariffs are a tax imposed on products shipped to a country from outside. These are often got around by manufacturing inside that country but having the base in the country of your choice. Foreign car companies love to do that in America)
4. Reduction of arms and troops.
5. Countries, such as France's Vietnam, shall have a say in their government rather than the sovereign nation governing everything.
6. Moving foreigners (and by that I mean troops) out of Russia
7. In the beginning, what started World War I (which was what led to Wilson making his 14 points) was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the archduke by Princip. The Austrians basically owned Belgium. (By owned i mean it as a synonym to pwned, if you know what that means, not actually having Belgium as part of their property)
8. France was invaded by Germany. Germans are to be kicked out.
9. Italy was uniting under the fascist Mussolini. He was taking territories that were not necessarily Italian. Wilson wanted to limit his territories to those that were actually Italian in culture and language.
10. Austria-Hungary is a unified Germany. They were the losers of the war and would thus be punished for it. At the Treaty of Versailles, where Wilson proposed his 14 points, the French leader, Clemenceau declared that he wanted to "squeeze the German lemon till the pips squeaked". Wilson did not want Germany to get owned.
11. Again, pretty obvious, the place needs to be evacuated, it was owned.
12. Pretty obvious too, security for the turks.
13. Again, really obvious, a Polish state should be named for the Polish people. Since the beginning of its existence, Poland had been playing a game of "Now you see it, now you don't." It had been owned and conquered, rebuilt, owned and conquered again, blah, blah, blah, blah.
14. This refers to Wilson's desire to create a "League of Nations", which was the predecessor to today's United Nations.

It should be known that almost none of these points were actually taken into effect. Wilson, in appeasement to the other aggressive leader, sacrificed his first 13 points to fulfill his 14th point, the League of Nations, which turned out to be a failure. He betrayed the kaiser of Germany and neglected the plight of Vietnam's leader, Ho Chi Min. This led to Germany's desire for revenge and the beginning of World War II and Vietnam's seeking allies in the communist camp, leading to the Vietnam War. It should also be known that although the League of Nations was a complete failure, the United Nations that currently exists today is not.

Anita Said:

what do i have to do to get into harvard university?

We Answered:

First off, Collegeboard is an excellent resource for finding information on different universities, from deadlines to financial aid to application requirements.

Now, I'm not quite sure about Harvard specifically, but most 'selective' universities, such as Harvard and the Ivy League schools, require a very rigorous secondary school record. This means that they look at your classes and if you've taken the most challenging classes your specific high school has to offer. However, most do not look at your freshman year other than checking if you've passed them.

Also, all 'selective' universities require either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT. They usually require at least two SAT Subject Tests as well. For Harvard, if I recall correctly, you must take at least three. Most people take the SAT Reasoning Test/ACT in their junior/senior years. For the SAT Subject Tests, you should take a subject immediately after taking the class.

Now, I'm not sure if this is the case with Harvard, but most 'selective' colleges do not make decisions based on academics alone. Many would want 'well-rounded' students, meaning students who have had community service, work experience, clubs, sports, or other extracurriculars aside from doing well academically. Start joining clubs that you enjoy, and hopefully take some leadership positions. Colleges love that.

I'm sorry if I went off-topic, but I hope this helps! Good luck!

Chad Said:

Can somebody translate president wilson's 14 points in everyday language?

We Answered:

1) Diplomacy should be done out in the open, not as secret alliances between rulers.
2) Freedom of the seas, during war and peace
3) Free trade, as much as possible
4) No country should have too many weapons, just as many as they need for domestic safety.
5) The colonies should be given reorganized, taking into consideration European claims and the wills of the people in the colonies.
6) Help Russia recover from the war and enter the world of free democracies (remember this is right after the Russian Revolution)
7) Belgium must have its own sovereignty again.
8) France should be put back in its borders from before the war, especially when considering Alsace-Lorraine
9) Italy should be given the lands where Italian people live
10) The Austria-Hungary empire is going to be split up into autonomous nations of people with the same nationalities.
11) Explains what will be done with Serbia, Romania and Montenegro
12) Ottoman Empire dismantled, Turks get to keep Turkey, but the other peoples under Turkish rule (aka the Arabs) should be given their own countries
13) Poland needs to be a country again
14) There needs to be some kind of international group that talks about problems so we don't have this kind of war again (leads to the League of Nations, then to the U.N.)

Discuss It!
