English Comprehension Language Test
June Said:
Why is English given such an important place in competitive exams? We Answered:
The process of education involves transfer of information: data, methods, ideas, and philosophies. The typical transfer method is natural language, such as English.Colleges want students who are ready to absorb the vast body of knowledge already available in English; to demonstrate their comprehension of that learning through reflection and synthesis, again in English; and, finally, to execute upon that learning and/or add to the body of knowledge -- again, in English. In short, without a solid grasp of non-trivial English, a student will have trouble learning the material, doing the homework, and using the information later.
The variety of vocabulary is required to fully express some of the ideas effectively and succinctly. Have you ever tried to explain a complex idea to someone who has a good mind, but limited vocabulary? I've held detailed political discussions with people who have English as a tertiary language, and it's not always easy: I sometimes need a paragraph in place of a single word or noun phrase. Of course, that also gives me the chance to learn how to express the concept in the other languages that person knows, so it's still an interesting discussion -- but it wouldn't do for the intensity of college-level discourse.
A large vocabulary correlates well with the ability to handle complex ideas. The ability to deconstruct previously unknown words from both structure and context shows the ability to make your way through some of the advanced writings on various topics. Personally, I find your list of supposedly useless words both disturbing and enlightening. I used "ameliorate" just yesterday in a technical document. Of your footnoted list, I've seen five of the six words in the op-ed pages of my local newspaper in the past month (orotund is the exception).
Each of those words packs a more specific denotations and additional connotations into a relatively small space, as well as having different visual and audio properties. In the hands of skilled writers and orators, those properties are used to convey additional meaning. Speaking of Obama, did you follow the development of his oratory over time? Compare his discourse between the early stages of his Senate race to, say, his inaugural speech. I expect you'll see a noticeable change as his target audience changed from the bench and jury (plus any legal scholars of the future) to the common voter and the sound bite.
Thus, the purpose is not to set an arbitrary bar of insubstantial achievement: it's to select those best equipped to assimilate and apply the main body of our knowledge within the insufficient interlude allotted to this tier of education.

TOEFL itp , PBT . English language as a foreign language? We Answered:
Your best source of info is the test provider ETS.550 means that you have a good command of three skills: listening, writing ,and reading and will prove an employer or a training program (not an academic institution, for that you'll have to take the regular TOEFL) that you can work in an English-speaking environment
