In the second paragraph, when he first sees his mother, he lets the reader know that it is unusual for her to be there and to discipline the children signifying to him that this is not a normal occassion.

In the fourth paragraph, her speech and flushed face tells the author that his mother is agitated.

In the seventh paragraph, more anxiety is shown the author by his mother's mention of the Piscine's age.

In the ninth paragraph, the author sees as mother as a shield between him and this father, but she stands aside this time.

So the author's mother was a potential ally against whatever was going to happen and the father.
