Fourth Grade Reading Comprehension

Lydia Said:

Does anyone have any good short books to read aloud to a fourth grade class?

We Answered:

Stellaluna; The Empty Pot; Babuska's Doll, Stone Soup; The Dot; I'm Coming to Get You; Giggle, Giggle Quack; The King's Road, The Lorax, Sneeches. Fairly short picture books that are interesting enough to capture a fourth grader's attention but require some interpretation for the deeper meanings.

Jeffrey Said:

help with fourth grade reading?

We Answered:

Aww I would've tutored her for free if I lived near you.

Are there any colleges nearby? Usually college students can tutor for really cheap, or you can try high school students since they need "community service and volunteering" hours for college admission.

How can a child flunk when he has a genius i.q.?

We Answered:

If the teachers are right and he really is trying, then I would suspect dyslexia or possibly a problem with his hearing. I'd be less inclined to think it was a problem with vision (because then the problem would also show up with the spatial testing, right?), but I guess it's still a possibility if, say, he's having a hard time reading the board but can read something in front of him OK.

Consider that the 159 he scored in spatial skills is probably propping up his overall IQ score. He might only be an average reader (= around 100), but combined with the 159, he's still around 128 overall.

The other possibility is that the teachers are mistaken and he's not really trying. There could be a multitude of reasons for this, but I would only consider this as a last resort.

Try having him tested for dyslexia, hearing and vision problems first.

Take heart, though: your son is going to KICK A** at stuff like physics and geometry!
