Gcse English Comprehension

Terry Said:

How to get a 'B' or if possible an 'A' in GCSE English O level?

We Answered:

well for english the one thing you can do to improve is reading. to improve your essay you have to decrease the number of spelling mistakes. since your exam is next tuesday you don't have a lot of time to practice but try this. grab a magazine or a book and a sheet of paper and start copying words from the magazine/book on the paper. write about 1-3 paragraphs and make sure copy the words right! then read the paper for about twice so the words go into your mind spelled correctly! do this for about an hour every day until your exam. another thing you can try is watching tv in english and always aim for the highest grade.

How to get an A in GCSE English?

We Answered:

1) For comprehension: Read deeper into existing paragraphs. Like if there is a sentence that goes "70% of party animals refuse to go to any parties that have less than 75 people in it" Don't just accept the sentence as it is. Think of the statistic you've been given and think of the other 30%, think of the connotations and meaning of a 'party animal'. BASICALLY, read deep into stuff and don't go by their surface meaning. Also, draw links to personal knowledge, give personal opinions, draw links to another non fiction comprehension if you've been given it and always think of deep meanings and connotations for EVERYTHING!

2) For creative: As you are at an A, you are really good! But you can easily up yourself to an A* by using good vocab in inform, explain, describe (make a list of good words and learn what they mean and try to use an occasional one in your writing just to make it look good). Get very descriptive like don't just say, I have blond hair that shines like the sun. Say something like, I have yellow feather like hair that glimmers when the sun's light reflects off it. Think of the senses - Sight, Smell, Touch, Noise and as long as you keep those 4 in mind you'll do well. For argue, persuade, advice, make your argument clear and use the above tips to really make it good. Think outside the box.

I don't know if you do poetry as well but if you do do it in your school, do PEE paragarphs which is Point, Example (quote) and Explain. Give only 3 quotes for your entire essay but explain EVERY WORD of those quotes by looking at surface and deeper meanings and connotations of that word. Like let's say one quote you're using is 'his small emerald island' explain it by saying The word 'small' shows limitation in quantity but the tactile image followed straight after it in the word 'emerald' shows how the greenness of his island is still very precious to him and means a lot to him. You get my drift, hopefully!

I KNOW that is a LOT of waffle but take my tips and you are guaranteed an A if not an A*!

Also, the Letts How to Get to an A* book is worth buying!

English GCSE exam help please!?

We Answered:

I did paper one on monday, basically if the question was something like 'Describe the room you are in' go away from the whole 'The room I am in is...' because you won't get any marks for that. Try and use collective metaphors, for instant relate the exam hall to a prison. That kind of thing. When it comes to Comprehension make sure you read all the questions, I made the mistake of answering question three in question one, and I felt stupid. Hope that helps =]

GCSE English - Paper 1 - Section A?

We Answered:

Actually, it is not how many points you make, its how you make them.
You could probably get away with 2 or 3 points, assuming you discuss them in depth, using quotations from the source to support your argument

Discuss It!
