Unfortunately it all boils down to how well a person can read and
then how well a person can digest the information they've read.

Even with all the cooperative learning in the world and even if its of the highest standard possible, there can only be one person reading and comprehending at once. What that person gleans from their personal reading experience is purely down to how well they can read and how well they can digest the information they've read.

for what ever reason i went through the same thing with my girl when she was that age i came up with singing the books.......as we read together we sang the words and parts that she had problems with would become the chorus.....creative parenting.....they only consume what interests them my girl loves music....she still to this day hum.....while doing homework..lol.....15 yrs now.....
