Listening Comprehension Strategies

Tony Said:

ENGLISH TEACHER! HELP!! correct my essay?

We Answered:

When one tries to learn something, there are always going to be problems to face and overcome. Learning English, though, is not only my interest, but also what I believe to be an important tool for my future and career. So I decided to fly half way around the world to study English when I was 18. Undoubtedly, I did face many problems communicating with Americans in their native tongue. However, I did develop and use some invaluable language strategies to improve my abilities to converse and comprehend.

First of all, I forced myself to remember grammatical rules and sentence structures, which are extremely different from my language. Talking to myself, I would utilize the grammar I was learning and commit the manners of its usage to memory. This practice did help me remember English grammar much easier, and it also improved my speaking fluency.

Secondly, I used every opportunity available to listen to people speaking English: radio, television, people talking on the street. I remember that early period when I had first landed in the United States, and I had no idea what people were talking about. I would often misunderstand the meanings of what people were saying! However, once I started to pay attention to what I heard and immersed myself in the English speaking world, my listening and comprehension skills grew better and better.

There are always many obstacles on the path of learning something new, but the key is to simply keep trying. My experience has taught me to never just give up or forget about it, and to never pretend it will be better tomorrow without trying harder today. I deeply believe that if one can be brave and face difficulties, the solutions will eventually be found.

I hope this will be helpful for you, and congratulations on your journey!

Sincerely,
