From my own limited experience as a tutor, if your friend is interested in any particular topic(s), I would start with that, as far as reading and writing is concerned, so that she will more easily maintain interest and motivation.
-- My youngest brother never read until he became interested in motorcycles, at which point he began devouring motorcycle magazines and manuals.
-- I once tutored an Italian young man who had lodging and work that did not require customer contact through his uncle, but wanted to improve his English enough to allow a better job and also a driver's license, so we started out working on restaurant-oriented vocabulary and the driver's license manual.
-- I also tutored a visiting physics professor from China who wanted to improve his accent and vocabulary for both teaching purposes and for general learning about the U.S. He chose his own topics every week (geography, slang, compliments and courtesies, all sorts of stuff), and we just discussed them while I assisted with his diction and grammar.
-- There was a high school kid who was interested in nothing but landscaping and gardening and simply wouldn't do any math or language arts stuff because he thought he didn't need it. Right outside the window of one of his classrooms was a lumpy, weedy bit of ground. It was arranged among some of his teachers for him to write a proposal for a landscaping project there. The proposal had to include persuasive writing -- why the area should be landscaped at all and why he should be the person to do it -- and an oral presentation, all accompanied by a scale drawing of the proposed garden with labeled (Latin and common names) plants, a researched cost analysis for the garden and its care, and a detailed maintenance schedule. Various teachers helped him revise and edit and prepare for questions, and in the end, he was able to prepare and defend a high quality presentation. The biggest motivation was a promise that, if he did well, they would raise the money to let him carry out the project over the summer. The garden is quite lovely.

What sort of Universities should I be aiming for?

We Answered:

You should be aiming for Ivy Leagues, Naval Academy, West Point, Air Force Academy, Stanford, U of Chicago, MIT, Cal Tech, Berkeley and similar schools. I'd also say small liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore, but since you mentioned Virginia Tech and are taking Calculus as a Junior, I figure you might be interested in Engineering which is not really one of their strong points. But you did mention Politics and Business Entrepeneurship. Most top ranked universities do not offer an undergrad business degrees and it is not expected by MBA programs. (Berkeley, MIT and Penn have undergrad Business degrees.) An undergrad Economics degree with a few accounting courses is excellent preparation for an MBA. For Politics, one of the top program in the country is the highly competitive undergrad program offered by the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton. Princeton undergrads, a very select group of highly qualified students must compete among themselves to enter at the Junior level.

Most colleges and Universities look at grades from Sophomore and Junior years when calculating the GPA used for admissions. This is for Berkeley, UCLA, and the rest of the UC's but is typical:

Colleges will also look for evidence of leadership in extracurricular activities. For the service academies earning a varsity letter in some sport is important. Try Cross Country or Crew or Lacrosse this Spring. With a varsity letter and any evidence of leadership potential, you would stand a good chance of being offered an LOA offer(Letter of Assurance), which would take you out of the local competition for an appointment. Each MOC(Rep and Senator) can have 5 appointments at each Service Academy at any point in time. For each vacancy due to graduation or other separation from an academy he can nominate a slate of 10 candidates. Candidates with LOA Offers are not charged off against the MOC from whom he received a Nomination as one of the MOC's five sponsored Appointments.

This is from USAFA's website but applies to most highly selective universities:

If you are interested in a Service Academy, be sure to apply to the Summer Seminars when they open for applications during Junior Year. The application to the Seminar is also an application to the Academy. This year USAFA began accepting apps Dec 1. USMA, Dec 16. USNA not till this month.

Also if applying to an academy apply for the respective ROTC/NROTC/AFROTC Scholarship. This shows you are truly interested in serving as a military officer even if not appointed to the academy. NROTC and Army ROTC Scholarships pay full tuition regardless of cost and are merit based, not based on financial need.

Virginia Tech is the Land Grant University of the State of Virginia and one of 6 Senior Military Colleges. The others are Texas A &M, Norwich, VMI, The Citadel, NGCSU. Not too long ago every male at a Land Grant University chartered under the Morrill Act of 1862 was required to participate in ROTC Freshman and Sophomore year. Compulsory ROTC was dropped as a requirement at almost all Land Grant Universities between the early 1960's and early 1970's.
5 years active duty requirement for Service Academy Grads. 4 years active duty requirement for Scholarship program ROTC/NROTC/AFROTC Grads
You can calculate the regular military compensation for various ranks and locations at the following link. Location makes a significant difference:
http://www.defenselink.mil/militarypay/m…
2nd Lt( Army, Air Force and Marines) = Ensign(Navy) = O-1.
1st Lt( Army, Air Force and Marines) = Lt JG(Navy) = O-2.
Captain( Army, Air Force and Marines)= Lt(Navy) = O-3.
Advancement to O-2 by about the 18th month.
Advancement to O-3 by about 39th month
Good Luck!

What's wrong with me?! Why do I take too long on tests?

We Answered:

Well, answering your question...there is nothing wrong with you...you are just a perfectionist.
I have the exact same problem with tests and time...I always try to find the perfect solution to a problem so if there are more answers in a question it is harder to choose one...now remember that those tests are just a part of the admission process so don't get so stressed out about it...however it also depends on what college are u attending...and what is the average score in that school...

Standardized tests suck! I don't know why colleges accepted to use them if they don't really show how smart you are or how much you know about the subjects tested...it just shows how well you take a test which does not mean nothing in real life when you are actually doing something...

Don't get too stressed! I'm also doing it tomorrow...but it is the first time I take it (the ACT) and I haven't studied...just relaxed and it will be fine....I know it...I have been in America for two years and although I don't know the language pretty well I got a 1900 in my SAT...

Because I have the same problem as you I'll give you a tip to choose an answer: CHOOSE THE FIRST ANSWER YOU THINK IS RIGHT AT THE FIRST TIME YOU READ THE QUESTION; SELECT IT AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THAT IT MAKES MORE SENSE AND YOU WILL GET MORE TIME TO DO MORE QUESTIONS...BECAUSE IT'S THE ACT YOU CAN TRY EVERY QUESTION WITHOUT LOSING ANY PORTION OF POINTS...

JUST ENJOY YOUR DAY TODAY AND TOMORROW WILL BE FINE..!!!

How can i improve my intelligence???

We Answered:

ways to improve your intelligence include reading heaps-and widely, doing puzzles, reading the newspaper often, listening to the news and keeping up with current affairs. your past may affect how you are now. However, you may overcome this by re-training yourself to be how you want to be. try books on self mastery-they help. as for social skills, one of the best ways to improve is to practice!oh, and maybe get some counselling-because psychologists and sociual workers are great at giving you options that you may not have thought of, and diff ways to handle things

Discuss It!
