Online Reading Comprehension

Eric Said:

Where to find the best free LSAT practice tests online?

We Answered:

When I took it LSAC allowed me to buy as many practice tests as I could take. They weren't free but they weren't expensive either. BTW, practice tests are the way to go IMO. They helped me out a lot when I took it! Here's a link: https://os.lsac.org/Release/Shop/Publica…

Does speed reading impede comprehension? If so, what's the proper speed at which to read?

We Answered:

Read as fast as you are able to while still comprehending what you are reading. I can speed read, usually I skip around the paragraph to quickly grasp the point of it, but the more complex the writing, the slower I have to read. You have to be careful, it's easy to fall into the habit of speed reading and you can miss an important point.

READING COMPREHENSION FOR KINDERGARTEN. What are some books I can use to help my son. .?

We Answered:

Wow, I'm surprised that they would be doing this so early in kindergarten. I am assuming that the book is read to him, correct? Main things to work on would be who are the characters, what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story, and where were they in the story. You can do this with any book that you read to your child. Don't be surprised if when you ask your child what happened in the story your child tells you the very last thing that happened in the book, this is pretty common. Model this for your child a lot, by saying, in the beginning of the story, this happened, then in the middle, this happened, and at the end, this is what happened. Some good books to read are Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes, I Went Walking, I think by Audrey Penn, Who took the cookies from the cookie jar by Bonnie Lass, books by Jan Brett are good ones and Curious George books are good too.

Some of the latest trends in teaching comprehension revolve around 6 reading comprehension strategies. Making connections is one of them that kids like to do. Mainly you can discuss how the book reminds you of something in your life, another book or something in the world around you. Making inferences is another one. For this one I tell kids that they need to try to figure out what the author isn't telling us, for example by using the pictures. My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza is a great one for this. It is about a pig who tricks a fox into giving him a hot meal, massage and bath.

Have you asked your child's teacher what kinds of things they are working on in class? This would be a great place to start because she could tell you exactly what they are working on.

Once your child does start working on reading on his own, here is a great website to print free, easy reader books. http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/printabl…

scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the titles. It will have two of the same book for each page but these are great books for beginning readers. Good luck to you!

Reading comprehension problems?

We Answered:

Your college should have some kind of a help area in the English Dept. You should go there and ask for some assistance. Tell them what your problems are. They should be able to have someone sit down and work with you. Or perhaps there is a teaching dept at the school and you could work with a student teacher. Pax-C
