Steven Said:

How can I improve Reading Comprehension other than reading more books?

We Answered:

Reading and reading and reading doesn't help much if you don't understand what you are reading or the reason you are reading.

Read the questions first so you have an idea of why you are reading. Then keep the first two questions in mind as your read. Make sure you are looking for your answers as you read. Also make sure you mark which answers are definitely not correct.

Another thing I found helpful was to stop after every paragraph or so and quickly jot down what the paragraph was about. This way you can go back to specific paragraphs to answer questions and it keeps your mind focused and helps you monitor whether or not you are understanding what you are reading.

This is not a matter of raising your reading comprehension. I think it is more in the test taking strategies. Good luck!

What type of books should I read to better improve my reading comprehension?

We Answered:

To be completely honest, almost anything will help with comprehension. Try longer stories so you have to remember more and start with something you like and then broaden your horizons. Also, if you want to improve your vocabulary, to be blunt and honest, read those sappy romance novels. Those writers tend to use really fancy words to describe things. Twilight improved my vocabulary, ostentatious, ludicrous, masochistic, there's an entire book based on words used in Twilight that are also in the SAT. Main thing with vocab, if you come across a word you don't know, look it up! Otherwise, your vocabulary will never improve. Also, classics help, wuthering heights and jane austen novels are great examples as well as Frankenstein. Modern novels tend to use smaller words.

We Answered:

These are good tips:
Skim the passage to get the general idea.
Focus on understanding the passage.
Locate the main ideas, as well as important sub-points.
Work on the meanings of strange or difficult words.
Scan the passage to get a closer picture of what it is saying and its specific details.Write down these details in your own words.
Quickly highlight key words - what is the question asking you?

Reflect on them, review and revise them before putting down the final answer on the answer sheet.

Do not copy information directly from the passage. Paraphrase your points.

Reading Comprehension?

We Answered:

To improve your reading comprehension, the best reading material is . . .

1. something you find interesting
2. a topic you already know something about
3. a "comfortable" level in terms of vocabulary; not too challenging

If it's something you find boring, it will be difficult to stay focused. Even if it seems interesting, if it's a topic you know absolutely nothing about, there will be too much new stuff for you to comprehend and so it's not suitable. If the reading level is too challenging, you'll be using a lot of your "brain" just figuring out the vocabulary and not have much left for the meaning of the passage as a whole.

How do you improve reading comprehension?

We Answered:

I'm sorry that I'm in a rush, but reading more books won't help much from my past experience... It is some skills need to be picked up. I've answered another similar question before, see if it helps:
