Reading Comprehension Advanced
Tyrone Said:
How advanced is the reading in Stephen King's "The Shining"?We Answered:
hey i'm reading it too! im in 9th grade and am a little above average in my reading level, it's fine for me, should be fine for you!Danny Said:
If fiction reading v. advanced for age but factual comprehension more limited. What should we advise 2 read?We Answered:
most children and teens like fiction and there is above reading level fiction.... BUT most of them havent been exposed to good non fiction. if there was more of a push to read good non fiction books(a popular ones in my school are Chew On This and Fast Food Nation) we would probably like it more. ALSO the standardized tests in america, well NY at least, show us very boring non fiction articles that can turn us away from the genera foreverRick Said:
How to better prepare for reading comprehension test?We Answered:
If this is for the ACT, here are tips that got me a 34 on the reading (and I have terrible reading comprehension). Read the articles that most interest you FIRST. This will help you in case the time limit is an issue like it was for me. I would always read the fiction one FIRST, and I would save the sciency article for LAST. Also, I would do a quick scan of the article at first, just to see what it was about and get an idea of what it was about. Then I would read the questions. Then I would go back and read the article completely. When I noticed an answer to a question, I would mark it. After I was done, I would go back and look up answers in the story that I didn't get the first time reading it through. That kind of reading seems to work best for me, and it helped me make the best use for time.If it's not for the ACT or if it isn't timed, I would still answer the questions the way I said above, it just doesn't matter so much about which article you read first. Also, if it isn't timed, read it twice. or three times. I have poor reading comprehension naturally but this helps me really grasp things better and notice details I wouldn't have noticed the first way through.

I need help with reading comprehension?We Answered:
Here is a little exercise:Take notes as you are reading.
If you are reading a text book:
Create a note sheet:
1. Write down all the headings, subheadings and vocabulary terms. {leave some space under them for notes and definitions}
2. After you read each of these sections stop and take notes on what you just read.
This will keep you on task and focused.
Sometimes reading into a tape recorder helps too. When you listen to it back you can absorb the information without the reading aspect of it. It relaxes your brain so that you can retain the information better.
This works for my students and me. I have a reading comprehension problem and I have excelled in both college and graduate school. Good luck to you! ; )
