How can I improve my reading and spelling abilities and determine what grade level I'm at?

We Answered:

Without knowing your learning disabilities it's kinda hard to know what to suggest, but I do believe that the reading comprehension books at www.criticalthinking.com are the best. They really require you to think before responding so there's no way to just skim for the answers. They're under $20, too. They work really well with my ESL students and my own kids that I homeschool and I hope that they would work for you.

For spelling be really sure that you know your phonics backwards and forwards. That is 90% of spelling. Just know all the ways that each sound can be made and then try to memorize which one goes with each word. You can also try creative things like singing your spelling and creating little tunes, or acronyms like Please Send Your Child Home for psych--- words. My son hops back and forth from one foot to the other while he says each letter of his spelling words. Whatever works, I guess.

Good luck. It's great that you're motivated and trying to improve.

Assessment of students' reading levels?

We Answered:

You could try the Schonell reading age test, they also do a spelling age test - good to monitor progress - but don't test too often as they learn from the test.
