Reading Comprehension Passage

Naomi Said:

I need help with a question of a reading comprehension passage?

We Answered:

The word "struck" is being used in its connotative sense, in other words, not as the dictionary definition of struck/strike which means to hit. Rather, it refers to what the Germans "noticed about the man in the ice; what was particularly interesting, unusual, out of the ordinary, important. Now that you know what the question means, what do you think the two Germans particularly noticed about the body in the ice? This part you can answer yourself.

Penny Said:

Rules of Reading and Comprehension, Letter by Letter, Word by Word and Passage by Passage?

We Answered:

I can't remember either not being able to read or having any trouble learning to read, and I remember being three. It's always been second nature. I'm pretty sure I see all the letters, recognize words, and read whole passages, because I am a champion speller with a mammoth vocabulary, but I have one hell of a time with Indonesian names and the like. I have to stop and sound out "Gema Suparmanputra Onbekend" as if I'm in first grade.

Dave Said:

How do I improve my reading comprehension?

We Answered:

When I was in undergrad I found that I was having trouble with reading comprehension and speed so I went to the learning center at my university. They had me set a timer and read passages as quickly as I could and then answer questions about the passage. I was surprised that reading faster actually improved my comprehension! Maybe try reading as fast as you can, concentrating on moving your eyes across the words instead of understanding each word of each sentence. Read for overall understanding. If you don't know the meaning of a word but understand the basic meaning of the text you can guess at the meaning of the word.

Another way to improve comprehension is to study vocabulary. When I was preparing for the GRE I checked out a GRE test prep book and wrote each word I didn't know on a note card, wrote the definition and made a sentence with each one. (Some very interesting sentences I would not have wanted anyone else to see, I might add) It may seem primitive, but even the act of writing out the note cards will improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. I still find myself using and coming across in my reading those words that I studied 10 years ago.
