yes, people are being watched and listened to, the book makes this vary clear from the start, no it isn't for their own protection, again the book makes this very clear.

sorry but I find hard to belive you made an honest effort to understand the book, even if you only bothered to skim read the first couple fo pages you would have picked this up

In all honesty, sparknotes will make this assignment much easier for you. My advice is to start there. Read the chapter summaries and some of the other info pages so you can have a better understanding of what's going on in the novel. I haven't read the book in about 4 years so my memory of it isn't great, but if you still need help beyond what sparknotes is able to provide, send me an email, it won't take much to jog my memory. If you have specific questions about things in the book or you need help thinking of recent historic events that parallel events in the story, let me know.
