Carl Said:

to have a medium effect size means?

We Answered:

What you say makes sense. The difference *would* be statistically significant with a larger sample *if* Cohen's d came out to be 0.51 again. But of course there is no guarantee that this would happen. In fact, failing to reject the null hypothesis means that you're not convinced that the true value of d in the population is anything other than zero. Still, many researchers would be encouraged by this result and would at least try to repeat the study with a larger sample.

Two other things worth mentioning. 1) The d of 0.51 means that the two sample means are about a half a standard deviation apart. That's what the 0.51 *is* ... the number of standard deviations separating the two means. 2) Calling this value of d "medium" is a somewhat arbitrary convention adopted by Cohen based on his experience with psychological research. In other words, a difference this large is neither surprisingly small nor surprisingly large in psychological research.

Good luck. It sounds like you're understanding things pretty well.

What is the best statistical test to determine whether a computer program really helped my students improve?

We Answered:

A t-test might do what you want. Would be better to consult a applied statistician.

Deborah Said:

Hello, I need a little help on this Math problem involving Statistics?

We Answered:

To explain the first answer, you know anything involving 100 is going to come out as a percentage. First you have to figure out what percent of 30,000 that 2,400 is. (2,400/30,000=.08)

Take that answer, and multiply 100 and that's how you get your 8 people.
