Reading Comprehension Skill

Ruth Said:

Why do so many people in this section have such poor reading comprehension skills?

We Answered:

Yes, it is true. I guess it is the whole texting and tweeting generation. I swear English teachers do not test comprehension anymore. Now its text the main characters of Macbeth to me and write in your journals that I am never going to read.

What is the best to improve your skill in critical reading and reading comprehension?

We Answered:

If it's something like a exorbitantly boring book such as a History book then you should...
- Try writing all important aspects down after each chapter (crucial figures of that era and bold terms meaning important events)
- Then, summarize after each page you read to let yourself know that you understood what you read.
- Just writing the information down on paper helps you remember easier even if u dont look at the notes again.

If it's a novel then you should summarize on paper everything that you read after a couple pages or for each chapter. This is good to review over if doing work on the novel in class. Also, if u rlly didnt understand what u have read in a paragraph then u need to re read until u get it. Dont just read the whole chapter over, do it when its more convenient meaning at the time that u just read over it.

Darlene Said:

Reading comprehension?

We Answered:

As a reading specialist, I can answer this in one word: read. If that doesn't work: READ.

Seriously, the more you read and MAKE yourself read it until you understand it, not just go through all of the words and say, "there, I'm done," the better you will become at reading. It doesn't matter if you're 6, 16, or 60.

It's much like playing the piano or playing ball. If you practice and practice and practice, but keep making the same mistakes over and over and over, the piece is going to sound bad or your pitch isn't going to cross the plate.. Likewise, in reading, if you just read the words, it's not going to make sense. You have to read more intentionally, and dig in and pull out the meaning. Sometimes that means re-reading it, or RE-re-reading, and so on, until you finally get it.
