Jerry Said:

Is my son's teacher doing her job. How can I make sure or what can I do?

We Answered:

Regardless, your son's educator should be more asseritve and organized. Although teachers are often rushed and in a haste, they gain there prestige by maintaining a multi-tasking lifestyle. I am in the process of getting teacher certification and a no-no is unpreparedness. She should not leave you hanging without input or ideas on how to aid your son. And yes, classmates should engage in creative construction with one another, and sometimes grading another peers paper can help a child see what he or she, themselves, is doing wrong. Her methods could use some cleaning up. I wouldn't pass to much judgment on her too quickly. She might be going through something personal. You know everyone has there problems. I would talk to some other teachers and maybe someone who is over her and get further insight, and even though you are stretched for time, make extra time to help your son with whatever he needs. If this teacher does just turn out to be a slacker, at least your son will remember how much you did for him as a mother and a teacher, and he won't miss out on his education if you decide to help him through the frustrating educaion system. Good luck.

How to encourage a good reader?

We Answered:

Good readers usually have their own motivation. They read because they love it, and the more they read, the more they want to read. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Public libraries often have reading activities for different age groups, and your daughter could get involved in them. Summer is coming, and most public libraries have some sort of summer reading program, with prizes for the number of books read and a celebration at the end of the summer.
Also, talk with your child's teacher, and if the school has a library (I hope it does), the librarian would also be very happy to help your daughter to keep up her interest in reading.
Your English seems very good to me--and as a librarian myself, it is wonderful to see a parent who encourages reading. It's so important; she will learn so much. Readers always make the best students--plus, your daughter will have a lifelong habit that gives her pleasure and knowledge.
Edit: I think it's sad that some people can't understand that there are children who enjoy reading, and there are parents who understand how important it is to encourage it. This is not the same as forcing it on someone.

I feel like my life is over by this SAT score 1315/2400?

We Answered:

Your life is definitely not over! So just take a minute to relax. I got an 1880/2400 my first time, third time, 2060. So.... here's my advice..... get the kaplan mini math workbook...best sat math practice. I completed every chapter and it's a small book, so it doesn't make you feel overwhelmed, which a lot of the big books do to me. Don't worry about completing all your books. Find one or two solid ones. Another good one is princeton review b/c it explains how to do each problem type. Critical reading: skim through answer choices first and underline main points. then read passage and underline in accordance to question choices.
Writing: Try to use both sheets of paper fully write a lot, and try to mention some books in examples-- really helps
Good luck!
