Reading Paragraphs For Comprehension

Leo Said:

How to improve reading speed and comprehension at the same time?

We Answered:

This is tough and might require a bit of practice.

Let's say the passage is about arthritis. The first paragraph will say that arthritis is an inflammation of the joints, affecting young and old alike in its different forms, with more expounding on that. That's the most important part to read. So then you are looking for young, old, and the different forms of arthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis - the sentence will talk about how it is diagnosed in children, but by seeing the key words - "Juvenile" and "arthritis" - you know at a glance that this is the part involving kids. Advanced degenerative arthritis - this is where it is generally age related and the bones are deteriorating. By seeing those key words, you know you're dealing with things not pertaining to children and brought on by age.

When you go to answer the 5-7 questions, if you still have the paper in front of you, by just identifying the keywords, you can probably remember where the exact mention of it was made in the text and go back and take a closer look, looking for those keywords, and allow yourself a little bit more time for the questions and not necessarily the reading in depth.

Try it with a short segment and see. Read the first paragraph carefully, locate all the keywords mentioned or implied by that first paragraph, then look at the questions and see if you can go back and identify the exact place you saw them.

Good luck.

SAT reading comprehension??

We Answered:

I definitely read the entire passage, summary included, before reading the questions.

For me, reading the questions beforehand just befuddles and agitates me--reading the passage is relaxing and even pleasurable (sometimes).

My trick is to know that there are only 3 types of questions they ever throw at you; I learned to recognize the types of questions, spot the traps, etc. (you know, 3 types = vocabulary, big idea, etc)

Help with reading comprehension in High School AP US History?

We Answered:

I'm taking APUSH this year also. At first, I read the chapter while taking elaborate notes. Then, I reviewed my notes instead of rereading the chapter. I got a 13/20 on the first quiz. Since then, I've changed my strategy to reading the textbook chapter twice, the AMSCO book twice, and going online and taking the practice quizzes there. That really helps. If her teacher is a psychology teacher, then he should not be teaching that class. If she cannot get help from her teacher, she should try to ask other teachers, such as previous history teachers or teachers in the history department. They should be more than happy to help. If your daughter cannot understand a paragraph after reading it many times then maybe she should try to get the information from another source, study that, and then go back and read the textbook. Most teachers use the American Pageant book for their class. My teacher is using Enduring Vision, so I don't really know the layout of the American Pageant book. However, since so many teachers with history degrees use it, then students should be able to understand it. If her friend/classmate understands it, then they could get together once a week to study the textbook. Dont forget that a positive attitude helps!
