Short Reading Comprehension

Darryl Said:

Are reading comprehension and writing ability related ?

We Answered:

The 2 are different and yes you can have one without the other but both are a boost.

Lets take a colleague of mine. She has amazing writing abilities, she barely even tries and is better than most best sellers and classics. It is because she is using different parts of her brain. Her comprehension is very low, most often she needs correction and help to "get" something. The parts of her brain stimulated to create are more active than those dedicated to comprehend and absorb information.

Now lets take someone else I've been working with. He is actually within the top 1% of comprehension ability in the united states. He has more than most ivy league students and even the leaders of the world. He does struggle though, to write. His writing has cause a lot of commotion and attention but its very labor intensive for him. Often he spends weeks just formulating the "perfect" paragraph. His brain is use to receiving and processing information not creating it from scratch.

Now lets take the last one, the smart of the bunch she attends Ivy league schools and one of the brightest in the generation. Her comprehension is very high, but she has no creative style. Her brain is wired for mathematics, comprehension, language, etc. The piece will have perfect grammar but will put you to sleep.

Now attention span is very different. This is the ability to focus on one thing which for writing is a serious issue. Unless done is very short session with high creative skill this can be a hinder that may not be overcome.

As you can see, people all over the board can have bits of pieces of a good writer. Its when these qualities come together that a great writer happens. But no one has to be a great writer to be successful. Just look on the book shelf or in theaters.

Ella Said:

How could I improve my Reading Comprehension?

We Answered:

The 'art' of story telling is in descriptive phrase which sometimes is hidden in cryptic language, using metaphors and other literary devices.

If you don't like how the literary devices are used, that could be the reason why you don't 'get it'.

Think of story telling as painting a picture. Sure, a scientific diagram would suffice to describe what the artist's eye sees. But that is not art. Painting implies the use of colour and stroke and perspective and the subtleties of shadow. When the artist uses these elements of colour, line, balance and shade then the painting describes well what the artist wants to say.

I would suggest that you read more. Read books that are descriptive and are rich in analogies.

Hopefully, one day, you will develop a love for reading and you will not be so 'hung up' on comprehension, just appreciation.

(Too bad your elementary education did not include enough reading comprehension lessons. By now, you should be adept at it.)

Steve Said:

How to improve reading comprehension? ?

We Answered:

The base of good comprehension is the knowledge of vocabulary, and the context is always the best teacher for learning new words. Make sure that you use the language as much as you can and in as many different ways as possible. Do not only read, but also write, listen, speak, and above all, understand what you are hearing/reading. Use as many different type of texts as you can; short stories, novels, newspaper articles, etc.
