Short Stories Reading Comprehension

Jamie Said:

help with reading comprehension?

We Answered:

Well you can ask your teacher if you could take a reading class since you don't understand and they can teach you some ways to comprehend better. Or reading out loud might help. maybe every paragraph you could write down some of the things in a summery and then re read what you wrote when you have finshed the story...

A book to help my 11 y.o son with reading?

We Answered:

Where the Red Fern Grows is great for this age range.

The plot is approachable and straight forward. There is adventure, there are some good moral lessons (ie, good things come to those who wait; bad things will happen if you're dishonest), and it deals with the loss of loved ones in a touching matter.

Fantasy novels may have some appeal, also. They usually aren't technical writing, and they usually have a story line that continues with characters through multiple books. Try the Dragonlance series (easy); Shannara series (Terry Brooks) (fairly easy); or even Lord of the Rings (more complex).

Robert Aspin has a series of books, also, that might be interesting. They all play with the word "myth" in the title. Pretty easy reading, but some complexity of language.

Are there any web sites that can help me assist my 4th grader with reading and comprehension.?

...and also contact the school for links...most good links require passwords. You also need to teach your child to pause while reading and think about what they are reading.

Reading isn't a race. They have to make connections to the world and their lives.
Research good comprehension questions such as how can you relate to the text? How can does this relate to something in a another book you have read? How does it relate to something in the world?

Plan ahead and have specific goals about what you want them to learn and target the questions to that.

Finally, just have them enjoy what they read and practice. Comprehension is just not about question and answer drill.

Discuss It!
