I'm a college student too and I read slowly in the past too :)

I also found I need to read a lot every day so I decided to find some way to improve it last year. I found that reading more doesn't help, as my friends and I read a lot but many of us just keep reading slow... I looked into some courses and found speed reading is the formal way to improve reading skill. Thus I finally decided to go for some speed reading course and I get much improved now.

I learned that there is a set of formal techniques to read faster, there are also techniques on comprehension and memorization too. I'll suggest you to find some speed reading course to learn with, because knowing the concepts alone won't help much. You need to practice with some tools in order to acquire the techniques.

I can recommend the online course I tried for your reference. I chose it at that time after some research, because I found it has good review on Amazon and it is not expensive. It also teaches comprehension, memorization, vocabulary, etc. There is also a website which talks about how to get the most out of the course, and how to get it cheaper. A few months ago, I learned speed reading with a course and I get very good result. It does contain both reading speed and comprehension improvement. Now I can read with a better reading speed than before. And even though I read at a speed faster than before, I still have my comprehension better than before.
