Strategies For Reading Comprehension

Fred Said:

Best way to help my dyslexic boyfriend with reading and writing?

We Answered:

Having a copy of spelling rules, homophones, most common spelling mistakes etc handy, has been a invaluable tool for my daughter, my students and I.

Practicing word and letter sounds will help, the link below may help too, but remember a lot of this stuff is geared towards children.

Have him read books that interest him, then get him to tell you what the book is about, who is the main character, (if there is one), what does he like about the book etc this will help with comprehension. Encourage him to take his time, if he uses his finger as a guide, let him, when and if he feels comfortable get him to read aloud, so he can hear the words and their sounds, (he may want to do this by himself, initially)

It might also be worth trying coloured overlays, which can help reduce the glare of the paper, headaches and movement of words or letters, and may make reading easier. Irlens coloured overlay

Both my daughter and I are dyslexic, and I use a number of strategies to support the dyslexic student, some of which I have given you, if you want more please email me.

Walter Said:

How can I help my daughter prepare for reading comprehension tests?

We Answered:

I know your daughter is only in 7th grade, but many academic talent searches use the SAT or ACT to determine how gifted a child is. I recommend you either go to the library and take out the ACT/SAT study guide, or buy one through their site or Amazon.com. There may also be one for the EXPLORE test which is also offered through the SAT corp. They have reading tests and suggestions on how to do better, tricks, if you will, on how to get higher scores.

These are the only study guides I know of for reading comprehension tests. Do a search for the specific test your daughter is taking and see if there are study guides for those.

Good luck!

Strategies for the ACT?

We Answered:

Always read the questions (and answers) first and keep them in mind as you read the selection. When you recognize an answer to one of the questions, answer it and then scan the rest of the questions again and reread the selection. Continue in this manner until you have answered all the questions for the selection.

In multiple choice answers, determine which answers could not be correct and then make an educated guess from the remaining answers.

After you have finished one section of the test, review your answers to all the questions if you have time.
