Art Therapy Degree

Donald Said:

Can I practice art therapy with just an art degree?

We Answered:

No, you'd need probably at minimum a degree in social work or some kind of certification that you are licensed to dispense "therapy".

Marie Said:

how many years will i need to be in college for an art therapy degree?

We Answered:

you can get a bachelor's degree in art therapy, but there is not much you can actually do with this degree. to become an art therapist you need a master's, which usually takes 2 years full time (60 credits), and before you get a master's you need a bachelor's (4 years full time.) there are some schools that now offer combined bachelor's and master's degrees in art therapy if you are a stellar student you can do it in 5 years full time! this is a great opportunity if you can work hard for the good grades. i wish this had been available to me when i was going to school!

i would encourage you to look at schools where you can also get licensed in your state as a counselor as well as a registered art therapist (ATR) through AATA (american art therapy association) because most health insurances aren't really looking at your AATA license to reimburse you for seeing clients, but they are looking at your mental health counseling license through your state (depending where you live, the license may be called something else.)

Lorraine Said:

Going into Art Therapy, its a Master's degree, but what do I do for the Bachelor's?

We Answered:

I go to school for MAAT, and I herd that Albertus Magnus College in New Haven CT offers a bachelors program. you don't need a BA in art therapy, just contact a grad program, and they will tell you the specific courses that you need to apply to the program. All are PSY and ART.
