Chemical Engineering Degree

Sally Said:

Can I get a nuclear-related job after getting a degree in Chemical Engineering?

We Answered:

I did, so I know it's possible. Not just nuclear power plants, but fuel rod manufacturing, reprocessing (if you're not in the US where it is illegal!), waste management, design, etc. They all hire and use ChEs.

Ernest Said:

Is it realistic to get a degree in chemical engineering inorder to break into the cosmetic industry?

We Answered:

It's mainly chemist that create cosmetics so you will probably be better off getting a degree is chemistry with an emphasis on organic chemistry. It was a chemist who created the original ten lipsticks for Bobbi Brown. Good luck

Stephanie Said:

Should I get a degree in Chemical Engineering or double major in Chemistry and Engineering Sciences?

We Answered:

It really doesn't make that much of a difference. Chemical Engineering is an incredibly broad field.

As long as you can show that you're smart and work hard you're fine. Besides most people will only use a very small proportion of what they've done in college in the real world.

Call a few professors and engineers working in private industry and ask them what they think. They'll probably agree.

Allan Said:

What minor best goes with a chemical engineering degree if you don't know what job you want to have?

We Answered:

Philosophy. Several polls and surveys have been taken to show that immediately out of college, engineers which they had more technical training, 5 years out of college they wish they had more management training, and 10+ years out of college they wish they had taken philosophy courses.

Skip the 10 years and take them now. They're interesting and they'll make you think. Take some ethics/moral philosophy, some political philosophy, some logic, some philosophy of physics, or some religious philosophy. It's all good.

Lori Said:

What to do with a Chemical Engineering Degree?

We Answered:

Medical field, Pharmaceuticals, Chemical plants, cosmetics.. pretty much anything... just about every product made uses some sort of chemicals in its production.. these "niche" markets are going to be harder to get into than a standard engineering job but they are out there

Ben Said:

How much of chemical engineering degree involves physics?

We Answered:

It depends on your school and the type of degree. For B.S. you will probably end up taking about 12 credit hours of physics.

Chemistry: Chemistry 1,2, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry= approximately 15 credits + 5~10(lab crdits)= 25 cr
If you want to further your chemistry education, some people choose to take food chemistry and classes like that. With those you will have about 30 cr of chemistry.

Math: Calulus 1,2, linear algebra, vectory geometry, multivariable calculus, differential equations = about 15~18 cr.

Biology: Biology 1,2, microbiology, labs, etc = about 15 cr

Chem:phys:bio about 2:1:1
That all depends on what you want to take. You can always take more. The ratio is for biochem E. ChemE doesn't take biology. (doesn't have to)
