Computer Engineering Degree

John Said:

Can a computer engineering degree be used to be a video game programmer?

We Answered:

The CE degree was a 5-year program as opposed to the CIS or DBA 4-year. The CE dudes were only allowed to use C. Math was easy for them. Their assignments would be to make a mock-up of virtual Windows XP for the various CPU. My friends that completed CE had a choice of jobs before they graduated.

So, yeah you could waste your talent in video game industries. Most game companies are small, underfunded and hoping for a homerun.

What can you do with a computer engineering degree?

We Answered:

If you have a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be in advace of of the crowd when it comes to searching for vocations. My friend has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he uncovered some good instruction on the site in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is lots of help on the site regarding extra vocations.

Laura Said:

Is it easier to get a job with a Computer Engineering degree or a degree in Computer Science ?

We Answered:

It always depends on what you field you want to enter.

For example, if you want to be a systems engineer, systems admin, networking, hardware, or some field more on the database and operating system side, then Computer Engineering is best.

If your interests lie more in application development, then Computer Science is the path you will want to take.

I would decide based on what you enjoy most. Do you like programming (computer science) or dealing with hardware/electrical engineering (computer engineering)?

Kim Said:

My math skills are sub-par, is a computer engineering degree still in my future?

We Answered:

Computer engineering requires a fair amount of math, depending upon the program you are in.

Your program will require you to take five math courses and a statistics course, so you would have to improve your math skills. You are going about it the right way, by starting with a basic course. There will be time for calculus later.

The math courses you have to take are first and second year undergraduate courses. They are not impossibly hard, but they are the kind of courses that require you to keep up with the material, and to practice doing a lot of problems.

The best thing might be for you to see where you are after you complete your current math course. If you cannot see taking any more, then computer engineering might not be for you. But you may find that the course actually helps you improve your math skills.

Eugene Said:

What kind of job can i get in law enforcement with a computer engineering degree?

We Answered:

Usually a Criminal Justice degree is the "traditional" Police Officer degree path - BUT you dont NEED a CJ degree to become a police officer.

In your situation - with a BS in Computer Engineering - you might be able to work in logistics, maybe something to do with cyber crimes.....who knows. Computer possibilities are endless. Dont just look at the police forces either, FBI and DHS (Dept of Homeland Security) might be interested in computer skills as well.

That all being said...you will need to take a Police Exam (check with your states DHR for exam dates...usually every two years or so)...pass that...and then attend a Police Academy.

Discuss It!
