According to most US law enforcement agencies you need a hard sciences degree (biology, physics, etc) in order to work for them in their computer crime labs. So that may be a good way to start.

Your best bet is to investigate some of the INFOSEC or Law Enforcement related degree programs as a great deal of Computer Forensics pertains to the preservation of data as evidence. The technical skills are mainly associated with retrieving data off of storage devices and the utilization of tools designed to capture and analyze data obtained from those devices.

In any case, more than a passing familiarity with computing devices is recommended. You don't need a CS degree for that, a CompTIA A+ certification is probably sufficient.
