Degree From Schools

Constance Said:

Are PhD degrees from different schools are equal in value?

We Answered:

If a job calls for a Ph.D., then presumably you are qualified for that job regardless of which school you graduated from. However, it is true that a Ph.D. from a better school (not necessarily an Ivy, but the better schools in a particular discipline) are generally preferred and may be offered more money for the same job because of the demand for them. I work at a university, and if we were hiring a new faculty member, the quality of the degree would definitely matter. We would not, for example, hire someone with a degree from an online university at all, Ph.D. or not (I've seen such programs offered online in which none of the faculty had Ph.D.s themselves!). There is a whole tier of Ph.D. schools of the more traditional type that we would not hire, and we would probably be hesitant to hire graduates of most schools in other countries, other than those which we recognize as being excellent (Cambridge, no problem. University of Northwest Mongolia - we wouldn't consider). Then, given the choice between hiring candidates with equal publication and teaching records and equal personalities, we would much rather have the Stanford Ph.D. or the University of Chicago Ph.D. than the one from the University of Arkansas or Michigan State, even though those are perfectly respectable U.S. schools.

Carole Said:

How do employers view degrees/certificates from online schools?

We Answered:

Honestly, it depends on the employer, the position, and what you hope to do with the degree.

If you want to move up within your own company, in all likelihood an online degree will help you. It won't hurt you.

However, if you plan to change employers, some employers do not consider certain online degrees on par with degrees from brick-and-mortar universities.

To be completely blunt, if I were looking at your resume, and you had an online degree from some online school, there is no way I'd hire you. However, if you had an online degree from a reputable university, like RPI - they have a great rep as a brick-and-mortar university, and so that carries over to their online degrees - I'd hire you. Likewise, an online degree from UMass, I'd hire you. But from U Phoenix? To be quite honest, I'd pass.

Pamela Said:

Is A medical school degree from france acceptable in America?

We Answered:

Well, I disagree with the previous posters.

Yes, a physician educated in France is capable of practicing in both Canada and the US. It's not as simple as just applying. All foreign educated physicians must pass the US Medical Licensing Exam (all US students must pass it, too). The only problem is that US students take the first exam, called Step 1, right after completing the first 2 years of medical school where they studied the basic sciences. Step 1 is all science and if you have completed all of your training and obtained a MD in another country, you'll be several years out from having studied these sciences and that had adversely affected FMG's scores. Naturally, the way around that is to take review and prep courses before taking Step 1, but these can cost a lot of money.

The poorest decision would be to attend a medical school in another country and then try to come to either Canada or the US for residency training. You'd still have to complete the USMLE, but the European method of teaching is different than the US and Canda's and you'll end up repeating some of your training and missing out on other aspects. So, if you do decide to train in France, the best thing will be to complete all of your training there.

You can read about the USMLE here: http://www.usmle.org/
You should also review the educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates: ecfmg.org

11 of France's 50 medical schools are located in Paris. This link is to the International Medical Education Directory where you can research each school: http://imed.ecfmg.org/search.asp

Presumably, you speak French, as none of the medical schools offer an English program.
