Early Childhood Degree

Steven Said:

can you work with special needs children with a early childhood degree?

We Answered:

You don't necessarily need to start with a BS in Special Education.
If you earn your bachelors in early childhood, you could have your transcripts submitted to the state teacher certification department and they will specify exactly which courses you need to be certified in Early Childhood Special Education. 12 credits seems to be typical, with some sort of internship/student teaching which can be done while you are under contract.

There is a shortage of certified preschool special education teachers now and there are many roads to certification when that is the case.
I'd suggest you take a few courses as electives while you are in school that will give you at least a basic background for special ed; I believe most elementary education programs now include a course in "Inclusion" and/or diversity. Good Luck!

Rodney Said:

What kind of jobs can you go into with a early childhood degree besides teaching?

We Answered:

Depending on your area of studies, you may want to look into speech and language pathology as well as occupational therapy for special needs children. it is very rewarding and it pays very well, at least in Arizona, the positions are in extremely high demand.

Catherine Said:

what can i double major in if i am pursuing an early childhood degree or a general business degree?

We Answered:

You can usually double major in whatever you feel like, unless the subjects are too closely related (for example, math and statistics). But you wouldn't have to worry about that with business and early childhood education.
